WE KNIT AROUND IT
In recent years, we have taken the first steps towards our circular program. For example, we have chosen to work only with yarns made from 100% compositions, as these are essentially the only materials that can be truly recycled.
Since 2023, we have also started collecting old clothing made of 100% wool and 100% cotton. We also collect all cutting waste from our suppliers. With these fibers, we have developed our own yarn in Portugal.
OUR CIRCULAR YARNS
Together with our suppliers in Portugal, we have developed our own circular, 100% wool yarn in-house.
This yarn consists of 50% of our own recycled fibers, supplemented with 50% new wool. We do this to guarantee the quality of our products. Because we select and purchase the new wool ourselves, we know exactly where all the materials for our circular products come from.
We can reuse this yarn two to three times. After that, the fibers are too short to make a high-quality product from them. Because they consist exclusively of natural fibers, they are 100% biodegradable.
We are currently investigating how we can do this in the best possible way. And given the lifespan of our items, fortunately, we still have about thirty years to figure that out!
WE REUSE EVERYTHING!
OLD CLOTHES
All the yarns we use consist of 100% pure compositions. This allows us to fully recycle these yarns in-house into new yarns. The rule of thumb for high-quality yarn recycling is that they can contain a maximum of 5% other materials.
There are some exceptions, such as combinations of different types of wool, a mix of wool and silk, or various cellulose fibers such as cotton and linen.
CUTTING WASTE
In addition to recycling products we receive back from consumers, we also collect the material our suppliers have left over after production. Because we knit our products, we already have very little cutting waste anyway. But there's always something left over. This waste is often burned by the suppliers themselves.
A waste of material and bad for the environment, of course!
SUPPLIES
We have standardised the haberdashery for all our products. You will find the same black haberdashery on every product. This is a nod to our icon: the Rooscap, which since 1886 has been made of blue broadcloth and black haberdashery.
All the haberdashery we use is already recycled or biodegradable. Because we use the same haberdashery for all products, we can reuse it after collection.
